San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo Awards Wild Rides, Fast Times with Championship Buckles

Bareback: Rocker Steiner

Steiner battled it out with fellow rider Cole Reiner in Bracket Four; Reiner won the second round and Steiner the third.

Reiner took sixth in the first Semifinal and Rocker tenth, both barely making the Finals except for their total payout from the bracket round.

On Championship night, both proved they belonged there, earning exceptional scores of 89 points, Steiner on Pickett Pro Rodeo’s, Top Notch, and Reiner on Pickett’s Night Crawler. In the end, it was Steiner’s total payout which edged him out over Reiner.

Steiner is currently first in the ’24 World Standings.

Steer Wrestling: Jacob Talley

Talley competed well in Bracket Five, earning a 4.9, 4.0 and 4.1 second run in each round. In the Semifinals, he broke the barrier, eliminating him from automatic qualification to the Championships.

For Talley, that meant one last chance at qualification and a champion-size check during the Wildcard round. Talley tied to win the Wildcard round in 4.2, and came back with his best score of the rodeo, a wicked-fast 3.7 second run to win in San Antonio.

Talley is fifth in the ’24 World Standings.

Team Roping: Derrick Begay/Colter Todd

Header Derrick Begay and heeler Colter Todd roped consistently well in San Antonio, winning two of three rounds in Bracket Four to easily advance to the Semifinals.

The team caught again in the semis, but a 9.6 second run was not enough to earn them an automatic place in the Finals.

The team bounced right back, catching in a smooth 4.3 seconds to win the Wildcard round and advance to the Championships where they tied for first with a 3.8 second run. Ultimately, Begay and Todd’s consistency earned them the 2024 win.

Begay and Todd are currently fourth in the ’24 World Standings.

Saddle Bronc: Logan Hay

After watching his brother win two rounds in Bracket Three, Logan Hay was determined to follow in his footsteps. He won a round himself in Bracket Four, qualifying for the Semifinals.

Once again, both brothers covered their broncs in the semis and their earnings from the Bracket rounds were enough to carry them to the Finals. Hay went 87.5 on Calgary Stampede’s, Tokyo Bubbles on Championship night, a score that would clinch him the win.

Logan is fifth in the ’24 World Standings.

Tie Down: Shad Mayfield

Winning was the name of the game for Mayfield at this year’s San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. Mayfield won two of three rounds in Bracket Five.

In the First Semifinal, Mayfield roped in 7.7 seconds, again winning the round. Once more on Championship Saturday, Mayfield caught for 7.2, winning the finals and winning the rodeo.

Mayfield is currently first in the ’24 World Standings.

Fun Fact

Shai Schaefer set a new arena record at the 2024 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo: 1.5 seconds!

Barrel Racing: Kassie Mowry

Mowry proved she had what it takes to make the San Antonio Finals when she ran a 13.93 in round three of Bracket Four, the fastest time of the Bracket.

In the Semifinals, Mowry officially earned her place in the Finals, tying for second after a 14.18 second run against the likes of Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi, Lisa Lockhart, Sue Smith and Dona Kay Rule.

Her place in the San Antonio record books was further cemented after Mowry ran a 13.68 second run in the Championships, the fastest time of the 2024 rodeo, no doubt earning her the 2024 title.

Bull Riding: Clayton Sellars

After sitting out the 2023 NFR, Sellars seems to be back with a vengeance this year. So far in 2024, Sellars has won Rodeo Rapid City.

In San Antonio, Sellars won two of three rounds in Bracket Two, tied for second in the semis with an 88 point ride, then won the Finals with a 90.5 on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s, Yellowstone.

Sellars is currently first in the ’24 World Standings.

Breakaway: Danielle Lowman

The Breakaway in San Antonio was lightning fast this year. After a new arena record of 1.5 seconds was set in the first Semifinal, Lowman had her work cut out for her.

Lowman herself had won a round in Bracket Four but did not qualify for the Championship round during the semis. In the Wildcard round however, Lowman nearly tied the arena record, roping for 1.6 seconds in both the Wildcard round and the Finals, winning both and the 2024 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo title.

Lowman is currently first in the ’24 World Standings.
