Texas’s Winter Rodeo Run Concludes with Rodeo Austin
This week’s Rodeo Recap is dedicated to Powder River Rodeo’s, Miss Congeniality. The 2x Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year passed away last week at 26. One of the most recognized mares of her time, she bucked at her first NFR at just four years old. She was consistently marked in the 90s throughout her career and is a true testament to the animal athletes our sport of rodeo is built upon. Thank you Miss Congeniality, rest easy in your forever greener pastures.

Rodeo Austin Awards Buckles and Big Paychecks to 2024 Champs
Another Texas rodeo, another top-notch bracket-style competition that draws top-notch rodeo talent. Over the last two and a half weeks, World Champions and Rookies alike have competed in the heart of Texas’s capital city.
The top eight contestants in every event from the last 14 days of rodeo competed for the title of Rodeo Austin Champion on Saturday night. Roughstock riders ride for the top score in the final round while timed event competitors take home the buckle for the best average score.
Rodeo Austin concludes Texas’s major run of rodeos. From Fort Worth to San Antonio, Houston and finally Austin, the payouts have been Texas-sized and the shifts in the 2024 World Standings reflect as much.
Let’s take a look at how the scores bucked-out in Austin, and who now stands where on their road to the NFR.
Bareback - Tanner Aus: 90.5 on Andrews Rodeos, Empty Promises
After tying for eighth in round one with NFR qualifier Jacob Lees and 2x NFR qualifier Bill Tutor, 8x NFR qualifier Tanner Aus came back with a vengeance, riding Andrew’s Rodeos, Wrap It Up for 90 points in Round 2 before riding for 90.5 to win the Finals.
Aus is now 6th in the 2024 World Standings with over $54,000 in season earnings!
Steer Wrestling – J.D. Struxness: 11.8 seconds on three head
5x NFR qualifier J.D. Struxness has been on a winning streak in 2024 including Mississippi’s Dixie National. Struxness finished fifth in the 2023 World Standings, a career high. He must be determined to do it again. The Minnesota cowboy ran a 3.6, a 4.2 and a 4.0 flat for an average of 11.8 seconds to win Austin
Struxness is now 6th in the 2024 World Standings with over $40,000 in season earnings!
Team Roping – Dustin Egusquiza and Levi Lord: 12.5 seconds on three head
So far in 2024, 6x NFR qualifier and header Dustin Egusquiza with partner Levi Lord, a 3x NFR qualifier, have won the Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo and the National Western in Colorado. Winning seems to be a theme for the partners; they won the first round of Rodeo Austin with a 3.9 second run, then won again with a 3.9 in the final round for an average-winning time of 12.5 seconds on three head.
Egusquiza and Lord are now 3rd in the 2024 World Standings with just under $51,000 in season earnings!
Saddle Bronc – Traylin Martin: 92 points on Andrews Rodeo’s All Or Nothin’
South Dakota cowboy Traylin Martin is on his second year as a PRCA member. He didn’t place in the first round at Rodeo Austin, but came back in Round 2 to tie for the win on Dakota Rodeo’s, Richie’s High with an 86 point ride alongside NFR qualifier, Damian Brennan.
Brennan is fresh of a win at RODEO HOUSTON and is currently leading the Saddle Bronc ’24 World Standings. Regardless, Martin kept up his momentum and rode for 92 points in the Championship Round in Austin, earning him the win.
Martin is currently outside the Top 15, currently sitting 28th at just under $21,000 in season earnings. His winnings at Rodeo Austin make up half of his earnings this year!
Tie Down – Westyn Hughes: 24.3 seconds on three head
3x NFR qualifier, Westyn Hughes calls Texas home, so it seems only fitting his first big win of the 2024 season took place on his home turf. He finished 2023 11th in the World Standings after his third NFR. Hughes finished Round 1 of Rodeo Austin fourth with an 8.1 second run and was second place in Round 2 with a 7.6.
When Hughes backed into the box in the Final round, other ropers with a shot at the win had either missed or hadn’t roped in under 10 seconds. Hughes rose to the occasions, roped an 8.6 and earned himself a buckle.
Hughes now sits 10th in the 2024 World Standings with $30,420 in season earnings!
Barrel Racing – Kassie Mowry: 45.76 seconds on three head
Kassie Mowry has earned over $625,000 in career earnings. Mowry and her eight-year-old Bay gelding, Ladies Man, otherwise known as Emmett, added over $15,000 to those earnings in Austin. Together, they ran a 15.35 seconds in Round 1 to place second, a 15.01 in Round 2 for the round win and a 15.4 in the Finals, totaling 45.76 seconds for an average win title, check and a Rodeo Austin buckle.
Mowry unofficially sits 3rd in the 2024 WPRA World Standings with just over $40,000 in season earnings!
Bull Riding – Trey Kimzey: 89 points on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Greeley Hat Works Bonfire
Bull Riding can be anyone’s game. With stock from top contractors like Beutler & Son Rodeo, Rafter G Rodeo and Powder River Rodeo at Rodeo Austin, it’s four-legged athletes versus two-legged athletes and a true show of grit and skill.
When 3x NFR qualifier and brother of 7x World Champion Sage Kimzey, Trey Kimzey drew Beutler & Son Rodeo’s, Greeley Hat Works Bonfire, it was a match made in heaven. The pair were the only qualified ride of the night at the Finals, earning themselves an 89 point ride and Kimzey almost $26,000 in earnings.
Kimzey is now just outside the Top 15, sitting 17th in the 2024 World Standings with just over $34,600 in season earnings!
Breakaway – Tacy Webb: 7.6 seconds on three head
Breakaway roping has quickly taken over as Professional Rodeo’s fastest event. Breakaway roper, Tacy Webb is used to fast-paced environments – she’s an ICU nurse. Rodeo Austin was no different. Webb roped a 2.3 seconds in Round 2, a three-way tie for seventh place, then a 2.2 for the win in the Championships. All in all, her lightning-fast skills earned her the Rodeo Austin win with a total of 7.6 seconds on three head.
Webb is unofficially sitting just outside the Top 15 at 19th place in the 2024 World Standings with just under $15,000 in season eanings!
